In most cases, the type of golf equipment you use will depend on your experience, skill and to a certain extent personal preference. Indeed, it is true to say that people with mid level handicaps or indeed beginners with higher handicaps still might want to look at what equipment is available that will help them to develop their game. One of the ways to do this is to use a distance golf ball.
A lot of people that switch to using a distance golf ball find that they are able to drop several shots from their score simply because they are able to get closer to the hole as the ball flies further. Their construction are quite similar to any other ball but they do have some redeeming features which gives them the ability to reach these long distances.
Distance golf ball design
Distance balls are usually made with a two piece design although you can get several three piece distance balls that perform just as well. The core is probably the most important part in one of these golf balls as it is here the extra distance comes from.
The two piece construction also helps to keep the cost down, in comparison to other balls.
The coating on a distance ball
The coating is just as important as the core as it protects the ball. If the ball isnt in good condition is is likely to have its flight and distance impacted quite a lot – cuts on the coating being the main contributor to this. The coating on these calls are design to be strong and durable to ensure that they can stand up to the impact of being hit with a golf club repeatedly. These are usually Ionomer, Surly or Urethane as testing has proven that these are the best for the job.
Of course, this also means a set of distance golf balls will last you a long time, so you wont need to worry about your budget too much.
Which distance golf ball
You can usually pick a good ball for your skill level and swing by looking at the compression rating. When you hit a ball, the side becomes slightly flattened. When it is in the air, the side will go back its shape and in turn releases the energy that was contained in the core from the initial strike. This propels the ball forward which gives it the extra distance. The flattening is given a compression rating based on how easy it is to flatten.
A low compression rating signifies that it is a softer ball. This are ideal for anyone who has not yet developed a fast swing. A general rule of thumb is to choose a ball my matching the compression rating to the speed of your swing.
It is worth remembering that most distance golf balls reduce the spin on the ball to aid its flight. If the ball is spinning in the air, it is a sign it has been sliced or slightly mishit. The outcome of this is that the ball curves because of the spin so your shot will be off target. Distance balls however counteract the spin so you end up with much straighter – and therefore more accurate – shots. With that said, this can also impact your control and shotmaking abilities. You may find that you have less control as a result of this, though it is a small tradeoff and you should improve your handicap more by hitting the ball further, generally speaking. For this reason, it is also a good idea to look out for some good golf ball reviews.
